How to lock and unlock the client portal

Written By Timothy Murenzi

Maintenance mode closes the client portal while you're working on something. Clients see a short notice instead of their portal. You and your team keep working as normal.

Lock (close) the portal

  1. Go to Settings → Studio → Client experience.

  2. Scroll to Maintenance mode (marked Studio-wide).

  3. Turn on Close the client portal.

  4. Click Save changes at the bottom of the page.

Maintenance mode with the Close the client portal switch

While it's on:

  • Every client sees the maintenance notice — including clients who are already signed in.

  • Nothing saves or syncs for clients.

  • Clients can still sign out from the notice.

You can leave the portal open for one client while it's closed for everyone else ("close the client portal for everyone, or everyone but one").

Unlock (re-open) the portal

  1. Go back to Settings → Studio → Client experience → Maintenance mode.

  2. Turn off Close the client portal.

  3. Click Save changes.

Clients get their portal back as soon as they reload.

Closing one project instead

To hide just one project rather than the whole portal, open the project → Client portal tab and turn off This project appears in the client portal. To remove one person, turn off their toggle under Who can see it.

Troubleshooting

  • Clients see a maintenance notice but my switch is off. It may be a platform-wide maintenance from Workroom. Check with support.

  • A client still sees the notice after I re-opened. Ask them to refresh the page.
