Documenting Design Direction
Learn how to document approved design direction, materials, and client preferences inside projects.
Written By Julia M.
Overview
Design Direction (Overview section 05) records the approved look, colours, materials and the client's hard no's, so everyone designs and specifies to the same brief.
What's in it
Aesthetic — the look in a few words, e.g. "Warm contemporary".
Locked colour palette — approved colours and paint codes. Don't substitute.
Locked materials & finishes — approved stones, woods, fabrics and finishes.
Client rejections — hard no's — things the client has explicitly rejected. This list saves new team members from costly mistakes.
Edit it
Open the project → Overview → Design.
Click Edit, fill in the fields, and save.
Examples
Palette: "Benjamin Moore OC-17 White Dove, walls throughout."
Hard no's: "No brass. No cool greys. No open shelving in the kitchen."
