Getting started: enabling Automations and building your first one

Written By Timothy Murenzi

Turning on Automations

Automations is a premium add-on. If you don't see Automations in your left-hand menu, open your Apps / Marketplace area and enable it there. Once it's active, Automations appears in the sidebar and you're ready to build.

The build screen at a glance

  • Your list of automations — everything you've built, each with an on/off switch, a plain-English summary ("When an invoice is created → Email the client"), and its last run.

  • New automation — starts a fresh, blank automation.

  • Build with AI — describe what you want in a sentence and Walter drafts it for you (see Article 8).

  • Templates — ready-made automations you can drop in and tweak (see Article 9).

Build your first automation in five steps

  1. Click New automation and give it a clear name, e.g. "Thank-you email when an estimate is approved."

  2. Pick a trigger. Choose Estimate approved.

  3. Add a condition (optional). Skip it for now — you want this to run every time.

  4. Add an action. Choose Send email → recipient The client → write a short subject and message. Insert merge fields like {client-name} so it's personalized (Article 7).

  5. Save, test, and enable. Use Test to send yourself a sample (Article 10), then flip the switch to On.

That's it. The next time an estimate is approved, your client gets a warm thank-you automatically.
